Types of Bait

Everyone knows there are many types of rods and reels you can use when you go fishing, but what about bait? Did you know that there are many types of bait you can use? Other than the usual worms and minnows, there are many other types of bait that can be used. To find out which bait is best for you, you really need to put time and effort into trying out different types of bait.

The first category of fish bait is called live bait. In this category there are many different types of bait to choose from. There are earthworms as well as night crawlers and dew worms. You can also use insects such as crickets, flies and grasshoppers. Frogs and crayfish in addition to minnows, shad, and chub can also be used. All of these can be purchased at your local bait shop.

Another category is prepared bait. In this category you use bait that has already been prepared. This type of bait includes baked potato pieces, hot dogs, bread balls, cheese balls, salmon eggs, cereal balls, kernel corn and stink baits. Another category is artificial bait which includes plastic insects, worms, streamers and spinners.

To catch a certain type of fish, you may want to keep in mind the specific bait needed to catch it. If you want to catch a carp, you need cheese balls or baked potato pieces. If you want to catch a catfish, you need hot dogs and chicken entrails. If you want to catch a bluegill you need maggots.
